Sedation Standard

Home 9 Licensees 9 Policies and Guidelines 9 Standard of Practice: Use of Sedation and General Anesthesia in Dental Practice

Dentists and physicians administering sedation in dental clinics must be thoroughly familiar with the Standard of Practice for Sedation and General Anesthesia in Dental Practice (the “Standard). It sets out general standards for sedation and general anesthesia as well as standards specific to each modality.

The Standard also sets out educational requirements for obtaining a permit and well as

    • requirements for continuing education, and
    • minimum annual case numbers required to maintain a permit.

Questions about the Sedation Standard should be directed to permits@nsrdda.ca.

SEDATION PERMITS FOR DENTISTS

To apply for a Sedation Permit, please click HERE to log into your Alinity account. On your account main page, under available forms is where you can access the Sedation Permit Application.

All inquiries regarding sedation permit applications should be directed to PERMITS@NSRDDA.CA.

Sedation Permits for Dentists

Dentists must not administer sedation (other than mild oral sedation) unless they have been issued a Sedation Permit. As well, they can only administer sedation at an office which has a Facility Sedation Permit.

There is a credential assessment fee of $150 for new applications from dentists for permits to administer nitrous oxide and parenteral sedation.

Permits will be issued to successful applicants within 2-3 weeks of the submission of a completed and successful application. More time will be required to process application containing documentation which is erroneous, incomplete, or requires further investigation/clarification.

FACILITY SEDATION PERMITS (effective April 1, 2023)

Level 1 Facility Sedation Permits

All dental offices in which nitrous oxide sedation is used are required to have a Level 1 Facility Sedation Permit. There is a $150 initial application fee and an annual $150 renewal fee. These clinics will be subject to facility inspections on a random basis.

Level 2 Facility Sedation Permits

All dental offices in which parenteral moderate or deep sedation and/or general anesthesia is used will be required to have a Facility Sedation Permit.  There is a $300 initial application fee and an annual $300 renewal fee. Prior to being issued a Level 2 Facility Sedation Permit, the primary contact dentist for the Facility Sedation Permit at the clinic must, following application submission, complete the checklist below corresponding to the depth of sedation to be employed. These offices will be subject to facility inspections once every three years.

Applications

    • Dentists can apply for a Facility Sedation Permit for their clinic by logging in to the Alinity portal, completing the form, and paying the applicable fee.
    • Applicants will have to indicate the dentists/physicians who will be performing sedation at the clinic.
    • Applicants will be required to designate a dentist who is the primary contact for the Facility Sedation Permit for that clinic. (It need not be the individual providing sedation, but must be a dentist working at the clinc.)
    • Applications will be processed once the applicable application fee has been paid.
      • Applications for Level 1 Facility Sedation Permits are generally processed within 2-3 weeks if the application is in order.
      • Applications for Level 2 Facility Sedation Permits take longer since they require inspection by the Sedation Inspection Team which includes and oral and maxillofacial surgeon, a medecial anesthetist, and a biomedical engineer.

Annual Fees

Each clinic will be required to pay either $ 150 or $ 300 annually corresponding to the deepest modality of sedation used at that facility. The “Facility Sedation Permit Year” runs from January 1 to December 31. Renewal reminders will be sent out each fall.

The Sedation Permit status for dentists and the Facility Sedation Permit status for clinics is published on the NSRDDA Public Directory.
