Sedation Permits for Dentists

Dentists must not administer sedation (other than mild oral sedation) unless they have been issued a Sedation Permit. As well, they can only administer sedation at an office which has a Facility Sedation Permit.

There is a credential assessment fee of $150 for new applications from dentists for permits to administer nitrous oxide and parenteral sedation.

Permits will be issued to successful applicants within 2-3 weeks of the submission of a completed and successful application. More time will be required to process application containing documentation which is erroneous, incomplete, or requires further investigation/clarification.

Facility Sedation Permits (effective April 1, 2023)

All dental offices in which nitrous oxide sedation is used will be required to have a Facility Sedation Permit at a fee of $150 renewable annually. These offices will be subject to facility inspections on a random basis.

All dental offices in which parenteral moderate or deep sedation and/or general anesthesia is used will be required to have a Facility Sedation Permit at a fee of $300 renewable annually.  These offices will be subject to facility inspections once every three years.

Each facility will be required to pay either $ 150 or $ 300 annually corresponding to the deepest modality of sedation used at that facility.

Each facility will be required to designate one dentist as the primary contact for its Facility Sedation Permit.
