Mandatory Medical Emergencies Course

Required Elements of Mandatory Course on the Management of Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office

It is mandatory for all registrants to take a course on the Management of Dental Emergencies in the Dental Office at least once during their 3-year continuing competence cycle. Such courses may be available in a variety of formats, either in-person or online.

The course must be minimum of 3 hours in duration and cover all the following topics:

    • Basic physiology
    • Emergency preparedness, including equipment and supplies
    • Vasovagal syncope (loss of consciousness)
    • Angina/myocardial infarction/acute coronary syndrome (ACS)
    • Aspiration/airway obstruction
    • Allergy/anaphylaxis
    • Acute asthma/bronchospasm
    • Diabetic emergencies
    • Seizures
    • Stroke/cerebrovascular accidents (CVA)
    • Bleeding issues

  • ensuring that only qualified individuals are licensed as dentist and dental assistants,
