Dr. Louis Bourget – Oral Surgeon

Apr 19, 2021

On March 13, 2021, a hearing before the Discipline Committee of the Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia pursuant to subsection 34(4) of the Dental Act was held. The Discipline Committee heard oral submissions from counsel on behalf of the Registrar and Dr. Bourget pertaining to the matter of Dr. Bourget’s interim suspension of his license to practice dentistry in Nova Scotia. The interim suspension was imposed by the Complaints Committee on February 11, 2021, pending the full adjudication of a complaint brought against Dr. Bourget by the Registrar on January 14, 2021. Under subsection 34(4) of the Dental Act, where restrictions are imposed by Complaints Committee, the matter must then be referred to the Discipline Committee for a hearing.

A majority of the Discipline Committee decided to lift the interim suspension of Dr. Bourget’s license to practice dentistry pursuant to section 34 of the Dental Act.

In place of a full suspension, the Discipline Committee imposed the following restrictions on Dr. Bourget’s license to practice dentistry:

  1. Dr. Bourget shall not perform any dental procedures on any patient under sedation.
  2. Dr. Bourget shall not perform any dental procedures on any inmates of any correctional facilities.
  3. Dr. Bourget shall not perform any dental procedures on any patient, unless he is supervised and monitored at all times by a qualified individual (i.e. a dentist or a retired dentist) or a series of such qualified individuals, as approved by the Registrar for this purpose and at Dr. Bourget’s own expense.

These restrictions are effective immediately and are in place indefinitely, pending the Discipline Committee’s full adjudication of the Registrar’s complaint against Dr. Bourget.

In addition to these practice restrictions, Dr. Bourget must complete assessments and training as directed by the Discipline Committee at his own expense, prior to the Discipline Committee’s hearing of the Registrar’s complaint. The results of the assessments and training shall be delivered to the Discipline Committee.
